Some lesbians go through different stages of confusion, denial, anxiety, repressing their feelings and final acceptance that they are gay. In some cases it can take years and even a marriage and kids before final acceptance.
Parents can feel devastated at the news that their daughter is lesbian and probably won't provide them with the grandchildren they so wanted. This needn't necessarily be the case today though as adoption or artificial insemination is possible. The latter can be done through a sperm bank or someone they know such as a family friend.
There is never a good time to tell family and friends but you must do it at some point. If they care for you they will understand and support you, and only want what makes you happy. Tell them in a calm and gentle way and don't get aggresive if they react in way you didn't expect. If they have no idea that you are lesbian it could come as a shock and it may take them time to come to terms with the situation.
No one really knows what causes someone to be lesbian or gay. There are different theories including the absence of a parent, child abuse such as an abusive father which could cause feelings of insecurity and fear around men, hormones or just something that's in the genes. Whatever it is it really is perfectly normal for you and you mustn't feel ashamed or afraid to tell people.
polycystic ovarian syndrome is linked to lesbianism. Sufferers of this condition have an excess of male hormones in their bloodstream and side effects include fertility problems, an excess of hair, diabetes, acne and obesity. One in 10 women is thought to suffer with polycystic ovarian syndrome and as many as 38% of lesbian women have been found to have this condition,
Coming out of the closet isn't easy for any gay or lesbian person. There are whole hosts of issues to resolve including acceptance by family and friends that you are gay.
If you are lesbian and haven't yet "come out" don't feel isolated as you certainly aren't alone. A good idea is to join an oline lesbian community such as a chat room were you can meet other lesbians in the comfort and safety of your home. You will come across others in a similar situation to you and you can share stories and experiences.
There are many lesbian and gay online dating sites were you can make friends and even find romance, plus there are plenty of websites and forums offering guidance and advice for lesbians. Look out for local gay events and clubs in your area as well.
